Enhancing patients’ experience and awareness – Work Package 2

As part of the RHU Digital Urology 3D programme, Work Package 2 focuses on improving patient information, reducing preoperative anxiety, and enhancing surgical outcomes through the use of 3D-printed models of the patient’s kidney. Patient experience lies at the heart of these studies.

A study evaluating the impact of 3D models on patients’ anxiety levels

The first study, ANXIETY (UroCCR No. 113), is a comparative study involving 250 patients across six centres. It aims to evaluate the impact of personalised virtual or printed 3D kidney models
This enhanced therapeutic education approach compares patients’ preoperative experience with or without the use of a 3D model. Key endpoints include understanding of their condition, perception of the planned treatment, anxiety levels, and quality of life.

A study to compare generic and personalised models/comparing generic and personalised models

A second study, PERSONALIZE (UroCCR No. 114), involving 60 patients, aims to compare generic anatomical models with personalised 3D-printed kidney models. Through structured interviews and observations with both patients and healthcare professionals, the study will assess the psychological impact of the models, their influence on the patient–surgeon relationship, and their role in helping patients cope with their diagnosis and treatment.
